Boeing has officially finished the certification flight campaign for its 737 MAX 10 aircraft, marking a major milestone in the development of the largest member of its 737 MAX family. The final test phase involved evaluating critical cabin safety features, including the functionality of the lavatory smoke detectors and the aircraft's internal speaker systems. According to AeroTime, this flight testing effort comprised 976 individual sorties, totaling over 2,060 hours in the air, alongside more than 1,000 hours of ground-based assessments.
Throughout the rigorous testing process, the company focused on evaluating high-stakes components, such as braking performance on wet runways and the efficacy of newly redesigned engine anti-ice systems. The anti-ice mechanism had previously been identified as a significant technical obstacle, as it posed a risk of overheating during certain dry-air conditions. Additionally, Boeing tested an improved angle-of-attack system designed to prevent the transmission of incorrect sensor data, which has been a primary concern for regulatory bodies since the initial MAX grounding years ago. These safety enhancements are slated to be integrated into all new builds and offered as retrofits for the existing fleet.
Looking ahead, the manufacturer must now complete its remaining safety reviews and finalize documentation for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). While significant progress has been made—with third-party development assurance reviews finished and the fourth phase underway—Boeing is maintaining a cautious outlook. The program has faced extensive delays since its original delivery target of 2020, hampered by a combination of regulatory scrutiny and necessary engineering redesigns. As it stands, the company is aiming for formal aircraft certification in 2026, with the initial customer deliveries anticipated to follow in 2027.
