Katalyst Space Technologies is currently navigating a critical technical failure following the malfunction of its Link satellite, a spacecraft designed to extend the lifespan of NASA’s Swift gamma-ray observatory. The mission, backed by a $30 million NASA contract, aims to physically dock with the $500 million observatory and increase its orbit to prevent premature atmospheric reentry. However, the mission hit a significant roadblock last week when the Link satellite began spinning uncontrollably, compromising its communication capabilities and navigation systems.
According to Ars Technica, the spacecraft is currently rotating on multiple axes, which has effectively severed reliable contact with mission control. The situation is further complicated by the failure of two out of the three reaction wheels responsible for maintaining the satellite's orientation. Preliminary investigations conducted via sporadic radio links suggest that the onboard cold gas thrusters, intended for fine-tuned maneuvering, are also experiencing operational issues. Engineering teams are now racing to regain attitude control to ensure the satellite can perform its docking maneuver.
Despite these technical hurdles, the objective remains to rescue the Swift observatory, which provides vital data on high-energy cosmic events. The Link satellite is essentially a service vehicle meant to perform orbital maintenance, making this recovery attempt a critical test for the growing field of automated satellite servicing.
