A federal letter carrier in Florida was taken into custody on July 23 following allegations that she misappropriated a winning lottery ticket while it was in transit. According to FreightWaves, the investigation began when a Florida Lottery player reported that a winning Pick 4 ticket, valued at $2,600, failed to reach its intended destination. Lottery inspectors subsequently tracked the winning claim to the Miami District Office, identifying Lekaysha Lockhart as the individual who redeemed the prize on June 19.

A joint investigation between the Florida Lottery’s Division of Security and the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General (USPS OIG) confirmed the fraudulent activity. Following her arrest, authorities stated that Lockhart confessed to both the theft of the document and the subsequent redemption of the funds. The case highlights significant vulnerabilities in the handling of high-value items within standard mail channels, raising concerns about internal controls and security measures for non-standard shipments.

Lockhart now faces a series of serious legal charges spanning multiple judicial circuits, including grand theft, mail theft, and dealing in stolen property. She is also charged with filing a false claim for payment and two counts related to the misuse of a two-way communication device. Florida Lottery officials emphasized that the integrity of the state’s gaming system remains a priority, with Secretary Reginald D.
