The Lombardy regional government has greenlit an additional €25 million in funding to support the development of the Milano–Desio–Seregno light rail project. This financial injection comes as the total projected cost for the 14.3 km infrastructure initiative has climbed from its 2022 estimate of €258.5 million to approximately €381.7 million. According to Railway Gazette, this significant increase—nearly 50%—has prompted local authorities to accelerate oversight to ensure the line remains on track for its 2029 service launch.
The new funding will be distributed through the municipality of Milan, with €15 million allocated for 2029 and €10 million for 2030, supplementing the €30 million already provided by the province. Regional infrastructure officials emphasized that this move is a necessary response to rising construction expenses and project delays caused by contractor insolvencies and iterative design modifications. The project aims to replace the legacy Milano–Desio tramway, providing a modern connection that spans across several municipalities, including Bresso, Paderno Dugnano, and Desio, eventually reaching the Seregno railway station.
Despite the added funding, the project faces lingering uncertainty regarding its final financial package. Local municipalities in the Brianza area have expressed concerns regarding the ballooning budget and are seeking formal guarantees that the remaining work will be completed without further interruption. While construction has intensified in recent months—particularly in Desio, where obsolete tram infrastructure has been removed—the 2029 operational target remains subject to both funding stability and ongoing execution risks.
