NASA has officially inaugurated the Flight Dynamics Research Facility at its Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, marking the first significant addition of new wind tunnel infrastructure for the agency in over 40 years. This state-of-the-art 25,000-square-foot facility is designed to replace aging research equipment, effectively consolidating the roles previously served by the facilityโs older vertical spin and low-speed tunnels.
According to AVweb, the new installation features a 20-foot-diameter test chamber capable of reaching airspeeds of 117 mph, which is double the speed capacity of its predecessors. The chamber is powered by a quartet of 750-horsepower motors that drive four massive, 14-foot-diameter fans, each equipped with eight carbon-fiber blades. This setup allows researchers to perform high-precision testing on various scale models, including drones, rockets, parachutes, and advanced aircraft designs, while also simulating flight conditions for atmospheric-entry vehicles.
The research facility provides versatile testing environments, allowing for both mounted model evaluations and free-flight simulations where models are unsupported in the vertical airflow. By facilitating higher airspeeds, the tunnel enables engineers to conduct simulations on heavier models and replicate conditions for full-size vehicles operating at higher altitudes. This project, completed in collaboration with the U.S. General Services Administration, represents a critical component of Langleyโs ongoing 20-year campus modernization program, ensuring that NASA maintains the necessary infrastructure to support future developments in aviation stability, autonomous flight, and space exploration.
