A collaborative NATO initiative aimed at developing a replacement for aging military helicopter fleets has officially entered its concept design phase. Led by six alliance members—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom—the Next Generation Rotorcraft Capability (NGRC) project intends to field a versatile platform capable of meeting operational needs for the mid-2030s and beyond.
According to FlightGlobal, the NATO Support & Procurement Agency (NSPA) has opened the competitive bidding process for four pre-qualified airframers: Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo Helicopters, Sikorsky, and Boeing. These companies have until August 31, 2027, to submit their responses to the request for proposals. While the NSPA maintains secrecy regarding specific technical parameters, such as the exact balance between speed, payload capacity, and flight range, previous disclosures suggest the platform must accommodate 12 to 16 fully equipped personnel and demonstrate high cruise speeds, ideally reaching 220 knots.
The project aims to synchronize the modernization efforts of the participating nations, seeking a common solution that can handle both land and maritime operations. The program is currently operating under a timeline that anticipates the signing of formal development and production contracts between 2028 and 2029. Success in these efforts would mark a significant transition in NATO air capability, with the first of the new rotorcraft expected to enter service starting in 2035.
