A new comprehensive analysis published in the journal Cell Press Blue challenges the modern dietary trend of prioritizing high protein intake. While recent U.S. government guidelines suggest consuming protein at every meal, the findings suggest that scaling back might actually improve health outcomes. According to TIME, researchers who analyzed data from 350 studies involving both humans and animals found consistent evidence that protein restriction may correlate with extended lifespans and improved metabolic health markers, such as fasting blood sugar levels.
Dudley Lamming, a co-author of the review and professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, notes the paradox between common perceptions and scientific observations. Although high-protein diets are often touted for muscle maintenance and satiety, epidemiological data suggest links to increased risks of chronic conditions, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, the analysis highlighted a 2023 study of twins which showed that those with higher protein consumption faced a greater risk of sarcopenia, or age-related muscle loss, than their counterparts on lower-protein diets.
While previous research has promoted high-protein regimens for weight management and physical strength, this review suggests that staying within the range of the official Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) may be sufficient. The current U.S. guidelines encourage intake levels up to double the minimum RDA, yet these new findings indicate that higher consumption does not automatically equate to better health outcomes. This research underscores a shifting perspective in nutritional science, suggesting that a more balanced, moderate approach to protein consumption might be more conducive to healthy aging than the currently popularized high-protein strategies.
