A discarded upper stage from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled to strike the lunar surface on Wednesday, August 5, at approximately 2:35 a.m. EDT. The 8,800-pound piece of space debris has been drifting in a high-Earth orbit for over 18 months, having been deployed during a mission in January 2025 that transported two private robotic landers, Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost and the Tokyo-based company ispaceโs Resilience, toward the moon. According to Space.com, the fuel required to deliver these payloads to their deep-space destination left the rocket without sufficient propellant to perform a controlled reentry into Earth's atmosphere, leading to its abandonment.
While the rocket body was initially placed in a compliant orbit, experts indicate that gravitational forces and solar activity gradually altered its trajectory, eventually positioning it on a collision course with the lunar surface. Julianna Scheiman, SpaceXโs director of NASA science and Dragon programs, noted that the company had taken measures to ensure the stage was safe according to established regulations prior to its abandonment. The expected impact is projected to create a crater roughly 89 feet wide on the moonโs sunlit side.
Researchers, including a team led by Benjamin Fernando from Los Alamos National Laboratory, view this unplanned event as a unique opportunity. They intend to use the impact to calibrate seismic detection pipelines and evaluate potential hazards posed by space debris to future lunar infrastructure and visiting astronauts. Although the crash is unlikely to be visible to the naked eye from Earth, specialized astronomical equipment may detect the resulting plume of debris.
