Japanese regional carrier Toki Air has announced the introduction of a new surcharge for travellers booking flights starting this autumn. Beginning in September, passengers will be subject to an additional system usage fee of 100 yen (approximately $0.70 USD) per person, per flight segment. This newly established charge will apply to all new ticket purchases made from the start of the month, adding a minor but noticeable increment to the cost of regional air travel within Japan.

The decision highlights a growing trend among regional and low-cost carriers to unbundle services and implement nominal processing fees to offset rising operational and technological costs. According to Travel And Tour World, the fee is structured specifically around individual flight segments, meaning passengers with multi-leg journeys on Toki Air will see the surcharge applied to each separate leg of their trip.

While the 100 yen fee is relatively minor, it represents a strategic adjustment by the airline as it navigates the competitive domestic aviation landscape in Japan. Toki Air, which primarily serves regional routes connecting Niigata to other domestic destinations, aims to use these additional funds to maintain and upgrade its digital booking infrastructure, ensuring smoother transaction processing for its growing passenger base.
