Turkey is accelerating its national aerospace capabilities with significant milestones for both the Kaan fighter jet and the Kizilelma uncrewed combat aerial vehicle. Turkish Aerospace (TAI) recently showcased its first Kaan prototype engaging in initial low-speed taxi maneuvers as part of its flight readiness program. According to FlightGlobal, the prototype features a distinct white fuselage finish, marking a departure from the grey demonstrator model that conducted its maiden flight in February 2024. Simultaneously, Turkish drone specialist Baykar has successfully demonstrated the weaponization of the Kizilelma uncrewed platform. The aircraft recently completed internal weapons bay deployment tests, specifically dropping a Roketsan Teber-82 guidance-equipped bomb and an Aselsan Tolun glide weapon. These tests are critical to validating the platform's ability to engage targets while maintaining a reduced radar cross-section, a key advantage for penetration missions in high-threat environments. Baykar emphasizes that the internal carriage of munitions preserves the aerodynamic efficiency and stealth characteristics essential for modern strategic operations.
The strategic importance of these developments reflects Turkey's broader goal to establish indigenous superiority in air combat. Beyond weapon drops, the Kizilelma has already begun exploring collaborative tactics, evidenced by a June demonstration where it performed coordinated maneuvers with a Leonardo M-346FA trainer. As TAI and Baykar continue to refine these advanced platforms, the integration of indigenous guidance systems and smart munitions remains a cornerstone of the nationβs defense modernization strategy.
